What Is It?
What Is Care Operator Fleet Insurance?Care operator fleet insurance is a single motor policy covering two or more vehicles operated by a care provider — whether a domiciliary care business running care worker vehicles, a care home operating minibuses, or a supported living provider using adapted vehicles to transport service users. A fleet policy consolidates all your vehicles under one renewal date, one premium and one insurer. Rather than managing separate policies for each vehicle, everything is administered in one place — with vehicles added or removed as your fleet changes throughout the year. Care fleet insurance is a specialist class. The use of vehicles in a regulated care context — CQC-registered settings, transport of vulnerable adults or children, care worker home visits — affects how insurers underwrite the risk. Aldium Insurance has deep care sector expertise and established relationships with specialist insurers who understand and accept care fleet risks where standard fleet markets will not. |

Why Aldium
A Specialist Care Fleet Broker — Not a GeneralistCare fleet insurance is not a standard fleet risk. The moment you tell a standard fleet insurer that vehicles are used in a CQC-registered care setting, carry vulnerable service users or are used by care workers on domiciliary visits, many will decline or apply significant restrictions. Aldium Insurance has arranged care sector insurance across all settings for many years. We know which insurers have genuine appetite for care fleet risks, how to present your operation to the market, and how to structure a policy that covers everything your fleet does. Whether you run two cars or fifty vehicles across multiple care settings, we arrange a fleet policy that works for your operation — with one renewal, one account handler and one team supporting you when a claim arises. How many vehicles do I need for a fleet policy?Care fleet policies are available from two vehicles. Unlike standard fleet insurance — which typically requires three or more — specialist care fleet markets recognise that small domiciliary care businesses or single-home operators often run just two or three vehicles and need fleet-style cover from the outset. |
Why do standard fleet insurers decline care fleets?Standard fleet underwriters are not equipped to assess care sector risks — CQC registration, the transport of vulnerable service users, domiciliary care operations and children's services. These are niche risk classes requiring specialist underwriting. Aldium accesses insurers who have trained underwriters with genuine care sector appetite. |
Can I include minibuses and cars on the same policy?Yes. Mixed care fleets — combining carer cars, minibuses, WAVs and vans — can typically be covered under a single fleet programme. We advise on the most appropriate structure, which in some cases may be two coordinated policies with aligned renewal dates if vehicle types require different specialist markets. |
Do my domiciliary care workers need special motor cover?Yes. A carer driving to client visits requires business use motor insurance — standard social, domestic and pleasure cover is not sufficient for driving in connection with employment. Our domiciliary care fleet policies cover carers driving to and between client visits, including both company vehicles and, where applicable, own vehicles used on care business. |
What is a D1 licence and does it affect minibus cover?A D1 licence category is required to drive a minibus with 9 to 16 passenger seats for hire or reward. For care home minibuses used to transport residents, licence requirements depend on whether the transport is classified as hire and reward or voluntary. We will advise on the correct licence and cover requirements for your specific minibus use. |
Can I get an any-driver fleet policy for care workers?Yes. Any-driver fleet policies allow any driver meeting a defined minimum age and licence requirement to drive insured vehicles without being individually named. This is particularly valuable for domiciliary care providers with frequent carer turnover, removing the need to notify your insurer every time a new carer joins or leaves. |
If you run a care fleet and are struggling to find an insurer willing to quote, or you want to check you have the right cover in place, speak to us. Our care sector expertise means we find solutions where standard fleet brokers cannot.
