Plumbers insurance is a package of commercial covers designed for plumbing and heating businesses. A typical policy combines public liability, employers’ liability for firms with staff, tools and equipment cover, contract works and commercial vehicle insurance. Employers’ liability is a legal requirement in the UK for almost any plumbing business that employs people, with a minimum limit of £5 million.
Plumbing carries risks most trades do not. A single failed joint can flood a property from the ceiling down; soldering and hot works bring a genuine fire exposure; and a van full of tools left overnight is one of the most frequently claimed-for losses in the trade. Cover needs to reflect that reality rather than being a generic “tradesman” policy bought on price alone.
Requirements differ depending on how you operate. A sole trader typically needs public liability, tools and van cover. A firm with employees must also hold employers’ liability by law under the Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969 — enforced by the Health and Safety Executive, which can fine businesses up to £2,500 for each day they are uninsured. Many main contractors and commercial clients also require evidence of £5 million or £10 million public liability before allowing you on site.
Aldium is an independent broker arranging cover for UK trade and contracting businesses, from single-van operations to established plumbing and heating firms with teams of engineers — building each policy around the work you actually carry out.
A plumbers insurance policy is built from separate sections that work together to protect your liabilities, your staff, your equipment and the work in progress. The covers typically available to UK plumbing and heating businesses include:
Covers claims from customers, members of the public or other trades for injury or property damage caused by your work. Limits of £1m, £2m, £5m and £10m are available — many contracts specify the minimum you must hold.
A legal requirement if you employ staff, including most labour-only subcontractors and apprentices. The statutory minimum limit is £5 million, and policies are usually arranged at £10 million as standard.
Protects hand tools, power tools and test equipment against theft, loss or damage. Cover for tools left in vans overnight is usually conditional — security requirements are set out in the policy wording.
Cover for the vans your business runs, whether that is a single vehicle or a small fleet — including goods in transit and liability arising from vehicle use in connection with your trade.
Covers the work in progress — materials and partly completed installations on site — against fire, flood, storm and theft before the job is handed over and becomes the client’s responsibility.
Relevant where you advise on, specify or design a system — increasingly common with heat pumps, renewables and commercial heating design, where the responsibility goes beyond installation alone.
Provides a financial benefit if you or an employee is injured and unable to work — important in a trade where income usually stops the moment you cannot get on site.
Legal advice and representation for employment disputes, contract disagreements, debt recoveries — the everyday issues that come with running a growing trade business.
These are brief descriptions of covers typically available to UK plumbing and heating businesses, provided for general information only. All policies are subject to their own terms, conditions, limits, excesses and exclusions — please refer to the policy documentation for full details. Comparison sites sell policies. We arrange cover — which means understanding how your business actually works before we go anywhere near the market.
Aldium is an independent brokerage. We present your business to the market on your behalf and recommend the cover that fits the work you do — not the policy an insurer wants to sell. And there are no call centres: you deal with named people who know your account.
We place cover across a broad panel of trade and contractor insurers, including schemes built for your trade. That access means we can influence how your business is presented, negotiated and priced — rather than simply passing on the quotes everyone else can get.
Taking on staff changes your insurance obligations overnight. We arrange cover for growing plumbing and heating businesses — employers’ liability, subcontractor arrangements, multiple vans and larger contract values — and we’re here mid-term when you take something new on, not just at renewal.
A claim usually lands at the worst possible moment — a flood at a customer’s property, or a van emptied overnight. Our in-house claims manager supports you during the process, reporting, evidencing and chasing your claim, so you can get back to work.
We arrange insurance for plumbing and heating businesses across the UK — whether you work alone, run a team of engineers, or hold Gas Safe registration for domestic and commercial work.
Single-van operations needing public liability, tools and vehicle cover.
Businesses employing engineers, apprentices or labour-only subcontractors.
Gas installation, servicing and boiler work in domestic and commercial settings.
Boiler, underfloor heating, heat pump and solar thermal installation work.
Fit-out work combining plumbing with tiling, joinery and electrical trades.
Contract work for main contractors, landlords, schools and NHS sites.
Newly established, growing, or taken on your first employee? We regularly arrange cover for new plumbing businesses and for firms moving from sole trader to employer — talk to us about your circumstances.
Trade policies look similar until you read the conditions. Most declined claims in the plumbing trade come down to the same handful of details — not the headline cover, but the wording around it. Under the Insurance Act 2015 every business has a duty of fair presentation to its insurers, so accurate information and sums insured sit with you as the policyholder. These are six areas worth looking at closely.
Soldering, brazing and blowtorch work bring a hot works condition that typically requires work to stop a set period before you leave site — commonly 60 minutes — with the area checked before you go. Breach it and a fire claim can be declined outright, however careful the job was.
Tools cover is usually conditional. Many wordings exclude theft from an unattended vehicle overnight altogether, or require the van to be locked, alarmed and parked in a garage or secure compound between certain hours. Van break-ins are among the most common trade claims — and the most commonly declined.
Standard public liability often excludes the actual item you were working on. If a joint you fitted fails, the resulting water damage to the property may be covered while the pipework itself is not. Some policies remove or reduce that exclusion — it is worth knowing which you have before it matters.
Escape of water is the plumbing trade’s signature claim, and it scales badly: a failed joint in an upper-floor flat or a commercial building can run into six figures once floors, ceilings, contents and the occupier’s losses are added up. A £1m or £2m limit can look thin against that exposure.
Insurers separate labour-only subcontractors, who work under your supervision and usually count as employees for employers’ liability, from bona fide subcontractors carrying their own cover. Getting this wrong on the proposal form is a disclosure problem that only surfaces at claim time.
Public liability responds to injury and damage — not to advice or design that turns out to be wrong. If you specify a system, size a heat pump or take on design responsibility under a contract, that exposure typically sits with professional indemnity, which many plumbing policies do not include as standard.
This section is general information for UK plumbing and heating businesses, not advice on your individual circumstances — appropriate limits, covers and conditions depend on the work you carry out and the contracts you sign, and responsibility for the accuracy of information disclosed to insurers rests with the policyholder. If you would like to talk any of these areas through, our team is on 0151 336 5881.
No comparison-site forms, no call centres — just a straightforward process handled by people who understand trade businesses.

Aldium have been a constant supplier for our vehicle insurances for a number of years. Nothing is ever too much trouble when replacing vehicles, or indeed when we just need a bit of advice regarding explanation of terms or such like. When policy renewal time comes around, they don't contact us until they've done their homework and have sourced the best value policy available for our needs, at the best possible price. Thank you to everybody at Aldium, we have no intention of looking elsewhere for our insurance provider.Posted on Google![]()

There is no standard price for plumbers insurance in the UK. Premiums are calculated individually by insurers based on factors including your annual turnover, the type of work you carry out, whether you employ staff or use subcontractors, the liability limits you need, the value of tools and vehicles insured, and your claims history — which is why two plumbing businesses of similar size can pay very different premiums.
The single biggest rating factor for liability cover — it reflects how much work you do and therefore your exposure.
Domestic maintenance, gas work, commercial contracts and heat pump installation each carry a different risk profile.
Wageroll, the number of staff and how subcontractors are engaged all feed into employers’ liability pricing.
Moving from £1m to £5m or £10m public liability — often to satisfy a contract — affects the premium.
The total sum insured for tools, and the security you have in place for vans overnight, both influence the rate.
How many vans you run, what they carry and who drives them — including young or newly qualified drivers.
Your record over the last five years, and what has been done since, influences how insurers rate the risk.
Gas Safe registration, MCS accreditation and trade body membership all help demonstrate how you work.
Larger contract values, work at height and jobs on commercial or industrial sites change the exposure being insured.
A note on price: the cheapest premium is not always the most suitable cover — differences in tools conditions, hot works requirements and liability limits can matter far more when you come to claim than a saving at renewal. As independent brokers we search our panel of trade insurers to find cover that balances protection and price for your business. Request a tailored quotation or call 0151 336 5881.
The questions plumbing and heating businesses ask us most often. If yours isn’t here, call us on 0151 336 5881 — a real person will pick up.
Employers’ liability insurance is a legal requirement under the Employers’ Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969 if you employ anyone, with a minimum limit of £5 million. The Health and Safety Executive can fine businesses up to £2,500 for each day they trade uninsured. Public liability is not required by law, but most customers, main contractors and commercial clients insist on it before letting you start work.
Usually yes. Insurers distinguish between labour-only subcontractors, who work under your supervision using your materials and are generally treated as employees for employers’ liability purposes, and bona fide subcontractors, who work independently and carry their own insurance. Apprentices and casual or seasonal workers normally count as employees too. It is worth confirming how yours are classified when you arrange cover.
There is no standard price. Premiums are calculated individually based on your annual turnover, the type of work you do, whether you employ staff or subcontractors, the liability limits you need, the value of tools and vans insured, and your claims history. £1 million and £2 million are common starting points for domestic work, but many commercial contracts, local authorities, housing associations and main contractors require £5 million or £10 million. Escape of water claims can also run high: a failed joint in an upper-floor flat can cause damage well beyond a £1 million limit once contents and the occupier’s losses are included. Check the insurance clause in any contract before you sign it.
It depends entirely on the policy conditions. Many tools policies exclude theft from an unattended vehicle overnight, or pay out only if the van was locked, alarmed and parked in a garage or secure compound between set hours — often 9pm to 6am. Some cover tools left in vans on stricter terms or a higher excess. Because van break-ins are one of the most common trade claims, this is the condition most worth reading before you need it.
Often not. Standard public liability wordings frequently exclude damage to the specific item you were working on, while still covering the resulting damage to the rest of the property. So if a joint you fitted fails and floods a kitchen, the kitchen may be covered but the pipework itself may not. Some policies remove or reduce that exclusion, so it is worth checking which basis yours is written on.
A hot works condition applies where you use a blowtorch, soldering iron or any equipment producing heat, flame or sparks. It typically requires you to clear combustible material from the area, have an extinguisher to hand, stop hot work a set period before leaving site — commonly 60 minutes — and check the area afterwards. Failing to follow it can allow an insurer to decline a fire claim, so the exact wording in your policy matters.
Not always, but increasingly often. Public liability responds to injury and property damage — not to advice or design that proves wrong. If you specify systems, size a heat pump, produce heat loss calculations or take on design responsibility under a contract, that exposure usually sits with professional indemnity. Renewables and commercial heating work are the most common reasons plumbing businesses now need it.
