ALDIUM Insurance
Specialist insurance for children's care homes and residential childcare providers across the UK β comprehensive, Ofsted-aware cover protecting your home, your staff, and the young people in your care.
Children's care home insurance is a specialist insurance package designed specifically for providers of residential care for children and young people in the UK. Whether you operate a small registered children's home, a therapeutic community, a semi-independent living provision, or a multi-site residential childcare organisation, your risks are distinct β and they require cover that is built around them.
Children's care homes face a unique combination of liabilities that standard commercial insurance policies are not equipped to handle. From safeguarding-related allegations and abuse claims, to the physical and behavioural risks of caring for young people with complex needs, the exposure is significant. Getting the right specialist children's care home insurance in place is both a regulatory requirement under Ofsted and the CQC, and a critical protection for your organisation.
At Aldium Insurance, our specialist care team has over 25 years of experience working with children's residential care providers across the UK. We take the time to understand your specific home before approaching our panel of specialist insurers β ensuring your policy provides the right protection at a competitive price.

Common questions about children's care home insurance answered by our specialist team.
What is children's care home insurance?
Children's care home insurance is a specialist insurance package designed for registered providers of residential care for children and young people. It combines standard commercial covers such as buildings and employers' liability with specialist protections unique to children's residential care β including abuse and mistreatment cover, safeguarding-related liability, and crisis management support. Standard commercial policies are not suitable for children's care homes and typically exclude the most critical covers your home needs.
Is children's care home insurance a legal requirement?
Employers' Liability insurance is a legal requirement for any children's care home that employs staff. Beyond this, Ofsted requires all registered children's homes to hold adequate insurance as a condition of their registration under the Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015. Operating without adequate specialist cover risks both regulatory action from Ofsted and significant uninsured exposure in the event of a claim or allegation.
Does children's care home insurance cover abuse allegations?
Yes β abuse and mistreatment cover is one of the most essential elements of a specialist children's care home policy. It protects your organisation against allegations of physical, emotional, psychological, or sexual abuse made by or on behalf of young people in your care. Critically, this cover applies even where allegations are unsubstantiated or malicious, covering your legal defence costs and any resulting compensation. This cover is not included in standard commercial policies, which is why working with a specialist broker like Aldium is so important.

Can I insure multiple children's care homes under one policy?
Yes. If you operate more than one children's care home, we can arrange a group policy that covers all of your homes under a single programme. This simplifies your administration, aligns your renewal dates, and can deliver better value than managing individual policies for each home. Contact our team to discuss a group quotation for your organisation.
Does the policy cover semi-independent living for young people aged 16 to 25?
Yes. We can arrange cover for semi-independent and transitional living provisions for older young people β including care leavers and those in supported accommodation. The cover required for semi-independent settings differs from registered children's homes, and we will tailor your policy to accurately reflect the level of support and oversight your provision delivers.
How much does children's care home insurance cost?
The cost depends on factors including the number of young people in your care, their ages and needs, the number and type of staff, your property details, your Ofsted registration status, and your claims history. As independent brokers we search the market across our full panel of specialist insurers to find the most competitive premium for your specific circumstances.
